President Trump received criticism in slamming Colombian President Ivan Duque for not having a more active and effective role in curbing drugs and crime from coming into the United States. As a result, the President received criticism from members on both sides of the aisle who urged him to not involve himself in what they deemed was unnecessary contention.
However, now, President Trump is once again calling out Duque along with other countries such as Guatemala and Honduras for contributing to the crisis at the border.
Today, President Trump took part in a roundtable discussion concerning immigration and issues with the border, and he shared his thoughts based on the information that was relayed in the discussion with other officials.
In speaking about Colombia, President Trump argued that they’re “sending the tough ones. They’re sending the gang members. Those are the people they’re sending to the United States. And the Democrats don’t want to do anything about it.”
Extending his comments to Honduras and El Salvador, President Trump further elaborated that “much further away” than Mexico, they are “sending real killers including MS-13 because they don’t want them in Honduras and El Salvador. They don’t want the gangs.”
President Trump further elaborated that the drug business has risen 50% since President Duque entered office, and President Trump maintained that President Duque has done nothing to curb the problem.
The Colombian President has not responded to President Donald Trump’s remarks, but the Colombian government has faced criticism in the past for taking part in drug trafficking and other criminal offenses.
Last month, President Trump sounded off on these concerns, saying that President Duque “said how he’s going to stop drugs.” However, “more drugs are coming out of Colombia right now than before he was president, so he has done nothing for us.”
