On February 19, 2019, the Navajo Nation, which is almost entirely situated in NE Arizona, declared a state of emergency due to the historic snowfall and subsequent flooding that hit the southwest United States.
Between the Navajo nation and Navajo local government chapters, about $1 million was expended on disaster recovery efforts.
Americans may think that American Indians like the Navajo have it made because of the protections the government has given them, but that is not the case.
With the median household income being $27,389, the nation is poor.
Now Arizona’s congressional delegation, including Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D) (pictured) have put their ideological and political difference aside, and penned a letter asking President Trump to “support a disaster declaration for the Navajo Nation.”
“We are writing in support of President Jonathan Nez’s request for a major disaster declaration for the Navajo Nation,” the Arizona Congressional Delegation wrote. “As you know, the Navajo Nation is a particularly impoverished region of the State of Arizona, with a median household income of $27,389.
Their poverty rate is more than twice that of the State of Arizona. These large expenditures for necessary lifesaving and protective measures puts necessary services for the Navajo Nation’s most vulnerable citizens at risk going forward.”
