At the end of the last week came the news that Mexico would cooperate in light of President Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on imported Mexican goods.
The plan was to impose a 5% tariff starting on June 10th if Mexico did not actively contribute to curtailing illegal immigration.
The tariff would increase to 10% on July 1st. Then, on the first day of the following three months, the tariffs would be raised by an additional 5%. It would’ve then been capped at 25% until Mexico “substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”
However, Mexico and President Trump were able to reach a deal that would see the country committing to stringer enforcement along its southern border.
On Twitter, President Trump made the announcement, informing that “the Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended.

To this, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) took to social media to not only congratulate Mexico on cooperating with President Trump but to also share his thoughts on how the media would be covering the news and what should happen next in order to make sure that illegal immigration is properly tackled.
Senator Rubio applauded Mexico for wanting both countries to “stay in the room” to discuss a plan, but he also mentioned that “securing their own border will go a long way.”

In his opinion, the sunshine state Senator argues that “the next step should be a U.S.-Mexico-Canada partnership to address underlying causes of migration from Central America.”
In addition, he emphasized that the cooperation is a good starting point but that he doesn’t feel like the media will give President Trump credit. In fact, he shared a story on the matter, calling it “a good example of how hard it will be for some in media to be fair in covering deal with Mexico.”

In the story, Senator Rubio explains that the story beings by saying that “Trump dropped his unpopular plan to impose tariffs after deal was reached.” He says this is false “as if the tariffs had nothing to do with getting the deal.”
The President has made his thoughts known concerning the mainstream media, and the recent developments concerning Mexico will surely incite a response from him.
