Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D) took a trip to visit the Yuma Border Patrol Station to meet with agents as she continues to tackle immigration reform and growing issues with illegal immigration.
In meeting with the border patrol agents, she discussed the challenges that they face regarding securing the border, ensuring that there is fair and humane treatment of migrants and that they are quickly processing migrants that are seeking asylum.
In a statement, Sinema, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, commented that “we must put the politics aside to address the challenges along our southern border.”
In addition, she stressed that she “will keep working with our partners on the ground and in the Senate to fix our immigration system, secure our border, and ensure migrants are treated fairly and humanely.”
Most recently, the Arizona Senator secured provisions in the border bill that passed Congress with bipartisan support.
Sinema worked across the aisle in order to make sure that three critical priorities were included in the bill, which include increasing the number of immigration judges at the border, providing funding for nongovernmental organizations assisting migrants across the state of Arizona and also creating a plan to process credible fear claims – critical to determining asylum – in 20 days or less.
