President Trump is holding his ground, and so are congressional Democrats, as the federal government shutdown enters its second week.
A bipartisan effort to get government back on track is in place, but Democrats refuse fund Trump’s border security wall along the U.S- Mexico border.
The decision by Democrats to refute the president seems political considering that if “The Wall” is funded, Trump, who campaigned on building a border wall, would surely use the win for his 2020 re-election campaign.
Meanwhile, three small illegal immigrant children have died along the Mexican border since the central American “caravan” completed its border journey. U.S. Border Patrol agents have since been forced to use tear gas and pepper spray to repel rock-throwing migrants looking to cross over illegally.
Here is an update from White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on the government funding stalemate:
“President Trump made a serious, good faith offer to Democrats to open the government, address the crisis at our border, and protect all Americans. We have heard nothing back from the Democrats, who so far have refused to compromise. Speaker Designate Nancy Pelosi released a plan that will not re-open the government because it fails to secure the border and puts the needs of other countries above the needs of our own citizens.
The Pelosi plan is a non-starter because it does not fund our homeland security or keep American families safe from human trafficking, drugs, and crime. The President has invited Republican and Democrat leaders in Congress to the White House for a border security briefing from senior Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday, and he remains committed to reaching an agreement that both reopens the government and keeps Americans safe.”
