List of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates continues to grow, as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI), Sens. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) join former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, as the only announced candidates.
This list potential candidates could grow to as many as 20+. If Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, who are considered the frontrunners were they to jump into the race, could Castro’s campaign turn out to be the sleeping giant that topples the favorites?
Castro checks off all the boxes for his political party. He has a young family, he's attractive, he can give a good speech, and yes, he is white of Hispanic descent
Are Americans are open to voting for another Hispanic presidential candidate (Sen. Marco Rubio ran in 2016)?
The two men are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, Rubio is conservative to the core, while Castro is as progressive as they come.
It will be interesting to see if white middle America will vote for a progressive Hispanic like Castro.
Will they vote for Castro, a very different type of Latino candidate, whose very ethnic-looking appearance could appeal to most Latinos living in the U.S.?
Castro states on his website several promises that he, and his fellow Americans can make to each other:
We can promise young people that college doesn’t have to equal a future of crushing debt. We can promise our seniors that they can count on a life of dignity. We can promise our veterans that they’ll be respected and honored when they come home. We can promise people of color that they are safe, and promise immigrants that they are welcome.
In the meantime, Castro is already on the campaign trail, having already visited Puerto Rico, Iowa, Nevada and especially New Hampshire.
It's interesting to note that Castro's first stop as a presidential candidate was in Puerto Rico.
