With President Trump and Democratic legislators having found a temporary fix to end the month-long government shutdown, legislation to end future shutdowns is gaining bipartisan momentum and support in congress.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman’s “End Government Shutdowns Act,” a measure that would permanently keep the federal government from shutting down, has even garnered the support from the two individuals at the center of the shutdown negotiations, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D).

“Now that the shutdown is over, we should roll up our sleeves and make sure it never happens again.” –Sen. Chuck Schumer

So, what does the shutdown legislation call for?

According to Portman’s press office, “the legislation will create an automatic continuing resolution (CR) for any regular appropriations bill or existing CR, keeping the federal government open when budget negotiations falter before key spending deadlines.”

Sen. Johnny Isakson

Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson (R), a cosponsor of the bill, says that “people with real problems” are the real victims during a government shutdown,” adding that he would like to see “a smaller and less intrusive government” than the existing one.

The current and temporary measure to reopen the government is not expected to last, as President Trump, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader Schumer, are have already begun to dig in their feet for a second and inevitable government shutdown.
