Rep. Ilhan Omar has been facing scrutiny over past remarks that have been deemed anti-semitic, and now Democratic leadership has released a statement condemning the comments that the freshman congresswoman made over twitter.

In the statement, Democratic leadership addressed that “anti-semitism must be called out, confronted and condemned whenever it is encountered, without exception.”
They explained that “we are and will always be strong supporters of Israel in Congress because we understand that our support is based on shared values and strategic interests. Legitimate criticism of Israel’s policies is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate that the United States and Israel share. But Congresswoman Omar’s use of anti-Semitics tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters is deeply offensive. We condemn these remarks and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to immediately apologize for these hurtful comments.”
Finally, the Democratic leadership expressed that “as Democrats and as Americans, the entire Congress must be fully engaged in denouncing and rejecting all forms of hatred, racism, prejudice and discrimination wherever they are encountered.”
In response to the condemnation of Omar’s remarks, Camille Gallo, the Spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, commented that “Nanci Pelosi and her leadership team have made clear there are no consequences for the anti-Semites in their caucus. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell must immediately call for anti-Semite Ilhan Omar’s removal from the foreign affairs committee, or she is just as complicit in Omar’s hate speech as Pelosi.”
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently penned an op-ed condemning certain leaders of the Women's March for having expressed anti-Semitic ideas in the past. While maintaining that she still agrees with the overall argument of the Women's March, she did address that she could no longer align herself with the leadership because of the uncovered anti-semitic remarks.
Rep. Mucarsel-Powell has not commented on Omar's future in the Foreign Affairs Committee.
