Cuba doesn't yet have an embassy in they U.S., but that hasn't stopped the Swiss government from serving as a protector of the communist country from the United States, and facilitating the groundwork for future Cuban embassy in Washington, D.C.
The Swiss embassy, which houses Cuba's Interest Section, erected a mast outside its doors in Washington, D.C., signaling to many that the openings of U.S. and Cuban embassies could be in the works.
The sole purpose for the installation of the Mast is be able to raise the Cuban flag the moment the Cuban and US embassies are open in their respective capitols. Cuban officials sang their national anthem when workers finished erecting the mast.
Several prominent Republican and Democrat members of the US Congress have already vowed to try to derail any efforts to open a Cuban embassy in the United States.
