Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), one of the brightest, if not the brightest rising star within the Democratic Party, continues to make headlines, as the 29-year-old Puerto Rican Americans continues to buck her party’s leadership, and her Republican opposition.
Climate change is at the top of Ocasio-Cortez’s agenda, having already proposed her controversial Green New Deal plan that has been met with tough opposition.
The economic plan she proposed has been called “irresponsible,” destructive,” and a national security threat, by Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart. (Read more here)
We asked Ocasio-Cortez if she believed Hurricanes like Maria that ravaged the island of Puerto Rico, were caused by climate change or global warming.
“I think what we are seeing is that the increased intensity and frequency of these storms is absolutely correlated with climate change, and it’s absolutely correlated to rising C02 levels,” said Ocasio-Cortez, adding that climate change “is a crisis.”
“This is a crisis and not only is this a crisis and a threat to national security, but it’s one that we know is coming. It’s one that we know is already happening. And it’s one that we are dealing with already. It’s here, it’s happening, and so the idea that the zero-sum idea that investing in climate change is somehow a different priority than investing in national security, is absolutely, and I think patently false.” –Rep.
