Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to flesh out her thinking on economic matters since taking office. While some of her more senior Democratic colleagues may be more reluctant to disclose their true intentions about giving the federal government substantially more control over the private economy, Ocasio-Cortez is very up front and unrestrained about doing so.
Yesterday, at a forum honoring Dr. Martin Luther King in New York City, Ocasio-Cortez was less focused on the core part of Dr. King's message and proceeded to identify a number of things that she believes are fundamental economic "wrongs" about the system our country currently enjoys that must be changed-
"I do think that a system that allows billionaires to exist when there are parts of Alabama where people are still getting ringworm because they don't have access to public health is wrong...I think it's wrong that a vast majority of the country does not make a living great wage. I think it's wrong that you can work 100 hours and not feed your kids. I think its wrong that corporations like Walmart and Amazon can...get paid by the Government essentially, experience a wealth transfer from the public for paying people less than a minimum wage."
Ocasio-Cortez didn't explicitly outline whats specific course of action the government would take to prevent billionaires from "existing", but it's pretty evident that her policies, if enacted, would reverberate across the economy.
