How important are Hispanic voters to President Donald Trump?
Just ask him.
“Wow, just heard that my poll numbers with Hispanics has gone up 19%, to 50%. That is because they know the Border issue better than anyone, and they want Security, which can only be gotten with a Wall.”
That was one of President Trump’s tweets touting a late January Marist poll that had him up with potential Hispanic voters.
It’s hard to believe that the largest minority voting bloc would be supporting a president who has been castigated as “racist” because of his immigration reform agenda, namely his building of “The Wall” along the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to Pew Research, 32 million Hispanics will be able to vote in the 2020 presidential election, outpacing black voters by 2 million.
The latest POLITICO/Morning consult poll has him at 45 percent overall, and 42 percent with Hispanics. Several other polls, including Reuters/Ipsos, Economist/YouGov and The Hill, have Trump wavering in the mid-30’s among Hispanics.
But how can this be you ask?
It’s simply quite simple.
Not all Hispanics think Trump is a racist that wants to deport every Jose and Juan back to their country of origin. Remember, Hispanics for the most part know what it’s like to live in a lawless society or country.
Why, after immigrating here from other banana republics, would Hispanics support that kind of lifestyle they left behind?
Since the border wall discussion began, and with all the talk from Democratic legislators about not funding the measure, Hispanics are buying the border security message Trump is selling.
These Hispanics do believe that illegal immigration is real threat to the sovereignty to the U.S.
Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, who just announced his presidential candidacy and will disagree that immigration is a problem, may not fully understand what makes sense to voting Hispanics.
In 2020, Hispanics could break the 2004 40 percent approval vote for President George W. Bush, and in doing so, reelect Trump to his second and final term in office.
