While Julian Castro has already immersed himself the 2020 Presidential election discussion, it looks like his brother, Joaquin Castro, will also be making a run for a government seat.
In a tweet posted by Julian Castro, the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development hinted that his brother Joaquin was “all but certain” that he would be running for Republican Texas Senator John Cornyn’s seat.

Julian assured that his brother “would work hard for Texans, not for cozy Washington insiders.”
In response to the rumored Senate run, which would mean that Joaquin Castro would forego his congressional re-election bid, Cornyn’s campaign manager said that Cornyn is ready to contrast his political record to Castro’s.
John Jackson, Cornyn’s campaign manager, detailed that “whether it’s Hurricane Harvey relief or the Green New Deal, time and again Congressman Castro has stood with Nancy Pelosi at the expense of Texans.” Jackson further explained that “John Cornyn looks forward to contrasting the Democrat-Socialist agenda with the policies that have made Texas the best state to live, work, and raise a family.”
With this inclusion to the 2020 Presidential election cycle narrative, all eyes will closely be watching the state of Texas. With Beto O’ Rourke and Julian Castro in the running for the Presidency and with Joaquin Castro in the running against Senator Cornyn’s seat, the dynamic changes for a state never thought to go blue. And, President Trump carried the state in the 2016 Presidential election with almost 53% of the vote, so he's expected to push back against Julian Castro in the state concerning Julian's comments on ICE and other matters that have become prominent in the political arena.
Although Julian Castro would surely be campaigning on behalf of his brother and vice versa, a decision has not directly been made by Joaquin Castro. Matthew Jones, Joaquin’s campaign advisor, when asked about the possible Senate run, simply said that “we’ll be making an announcement in the very near future.”
