The first salvo has been launched in what could be a very contentious 2020 U.S. senate race between Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) and U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R).
The race could already be shaping out to be ideology, as the more moderate Senator Cornyn is framing Castro as being a far-left Progressive, coupling him with “Beto” O’Rourke and Speaker Pelosi.
During an interview with The Texas Tribune, Sen. Cornyn stated that he didn’t think Castro would do well with Texas across the state because of his 97% pro-Pelosi voting record, adding that because Castro “votes to the left of Beto O’Rourke,” his chances of winning in 2020 are not very good.
"I happen to think that somebody who votes 97 percent of the time with Nancy Pelosi is not going to do very well in Texas. ... Congressman Castro votes to the left of Beto O'Rourke, and I just don't think it's going to work."-Sen. John Cornyn (R)
When asked about him their professional relationship, Cornyn said he “didn’t know Congressman Castro very well,” adding that while he has “virtually” worked with “everybody else in the Texas delegation,” he does not recollect ever dealing with Castro.
Castro tried to jog Cornyn’s memory by reminding him that just last week he called the senior senator to ask him to support one of his bills.
According to Castro, Cornyn never got back to him.

Rep. Castro’s twin brother, former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, is running in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
