Could the next President of the United States be a 37-year-old and openly gay man from South Bend, Indiana?
According to Pete Buttigieg, who just officially announced his presidential campaign, he will beat Trump in 2020, but first must defeat the growing field of Democratic presidential candidates.
"My name is Pete Buttigieg. They call me Mayor Pete," Buttigieg said to cheers. "I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana. And I am running for President of the United States."
"There's a long way for us to go. Life here is far from perfect. But we've changed our trajectory and shown a path forward for communities like ours. And that's why I'm here today. To tell a different story than 'Make America Great Again,'" Buttigieg said. "Because there is a myth being sold to industrial and rural communities: the myth that we can stop the clock and turn it back."
Buttigieg speaks well, is likeable, and has been able to garner a bit of a bump since first announcing an exploratory campaign in January, but can he overcome the likes of Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden?
Biden and Sanders have lead in all the national pubic opinion polls, but Buttigieg finds himself in the middle of the pack ahead of both Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and Sen. Kamala Harris in the latest Iowa and New Hampshire polls on the 2020 Democratic presidential primary race.
