This week, it was announced that Attorney General William Barr had ruled that asylum seekers cannot seek bond.
The declaration will not affect family units or unaccompanied children, and it’s expected to take effect in 90 days.
In recent weeks, tensions have flared concerning the crisis at the border, and President Trump even weighed in by saying that “the asylum program is a scam.”
In response to the Attorney General’s declaration, the ACLU released a statement saying that “our constitution does not allow the government to lock up asylum seekers without basic due process” before announcing that they’ll “see the administration in court.”
Florida Senator Rick Scott appeared on Fox news to weigh in on the issue, saying that we need to “enforce all of our laws.”
Scott explained that he’s been to the border and has witnessed firsthand the frustration from the border agents because of the need for “more people, more technology, some barriers.”
He stressed that laws are in place, and that the laws need to be enforced, and that a reason why people argue against it is because they think Hispanic people don’t agree with it.
However, citing a poll that was conducted after his election that asked if people agreed with enforcing stricter immigration laws, 69% of Hispanics are reported to have voted in favor.
The Senator concluded that “whatever the law is, we ought to be enforcing it.”
In terms of seeing change in policy concerning an issue like “catch-and-release,” the Senator was asked why no progress was being made considering the fact that the President is in favor of enacting policy change.
Scott responded that “Democrats believe it’s a good issue for 2020.”
He elaborated that he’s “been up there a little over 90 days, and everything is about the election in 2020.”
As he expressed, what it comes down to is that Democrats “hate Trump.”
