It took one critical phone call for House Democrats to agree not launch impeachment proceeding against President Trump, but only for now.
Democratic leaders jumped on the Monday call in an attempt to qualm the growing and unsettling fissure within their caucus, as members within the new Progressive wing of the party have calling for the immediate impeachment of the president.
According to two senior sources privy to the private 87-minute conference call between 170 Democrat members, leadership drove the point home that impeachment was off the table, for now.
"We have to save our democracy," Pelosi said, according to the sources. "This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans. It’s about saving our democracy. If it is what we need to do to honor our responsibility to the Constitution – if that’s the place the facts take us, that’s the place we have to go."
Rep. Katie Hill (D), who appeared on Fox News earlier on Monday and questioned why her party keeps “using this word collusion,” by appeared to still be supportive of impeachment.
Hill’s fellow freshmen Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar, are all ardent supporters of impeachment, with Tlaib having already introduced her impeachment resolution.
In the end, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Whip Steny Hoyer, and the rest of the House Democratic leadership, were able to stave off the calls for impeachment, a move that Pelosi admits could compromise their chances of retaining the House, and possibly the Senate.
