After the Democratic debates, both Senator Kamala Harris (D) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) experienced a surge in the polls as former Vice President Joe Biden (D) saw his poll numbers decrease.
As Democrats look for a candidate that will face President Trump in the 2020 Presidential election, the party is using momentum gained from the debates to hit President Trump.
Over the weekend, in an email sent to supporters, Rep. Adam Schiff (D) called the President “the most reckless and unethical president we’ve seen in recent history.”
Saying that the last two weeks have been a mess for the Trump administration, he blasted the President for “threatening war with Iran, bragging that it would be over quickly, and saying no exit strategy is even required.”
In addition, he accused the President of “defending the inhumane conditions at our border for detained children, many of whom have been forced to sleep on concrete floors with aluminum blankets.”
On the issue of the border and illegal immigration, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) visited Texas border facilities on Monday, and Castro voiced his disappointment, arguing that “we came today and we saw that the system is still broken.”
His brother, Secretary Julian Castro (D), has made immigration reform a priority in his platform, and along with the other Democratic candidates has actively opposed the President and his hard-line stance on immigration.
In Schiff’s message, he concluded that “we have the power to elect better leadership, from local office all the way up to the Oval Office in 2020.”
Schiff asserts that it “will only happen if we come together now to build the strong party infrastructure it will take to defeat Donald Trump and his Republican allies.”
This unifying message looks to correct the results of the 2018 midterm elections, which were expected to see a “blue wave” of Democrats elected, but instead it was a “blue ripple” where Democrats lost major races they were expected to win.
On March 3rd, 2020, the same day as the California Primary, Adam Schiff faces opposition in Maebe A. Girl (D), a Los Angeles-based drag queen that is looking to win his congressional seat.
Speaking on challenging Schiff, Maebe A. Girl commented that “I want to run against Adam Schiff because I believe the people deserve a representative that can relate to their struggles and who knows what it’s like to experience systematic oppression.”
Moreover, “in a political climate where so many people’s civil liberties are at risk, I want to be on the front lines fighting for them.”
