During the 2016 Presidential election, an issue on President Trump’s platform that Americans agreed with was the criticism against the Iran Nuclear Deal that was done under the Obama administration. Republicans championed the criticism, and it some way so did Americans by electing President Donald Trump.
Since then, the criticism has only grown, but Republican leadership is now calling for the deal to be torn up once and for all.
This week, Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham (R), members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (R), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a joint statement following an announcement made by Iran that it would begin injecting uranium gas into centrifuges at the Fordow nuclear bunker.
The Nuclear Archives that were seized by Israel identify the bunker as part of Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
In the statement, the lawmakers expressed that the “reports confirm what we’ve known all along: Iran has been exploiting the civil-nuclear waivers from the catastrophic Obama-Iran nuclear deal, which the Trump administration has continued to issue, to buy time and build up their nuclear facilities before openly returning to illicit activities in those very facilities.”
The lawmakers added that “it was entirely predictable that eventually Iran would go back to enriching uranium at their Fordow nuclear bunker, which they dug out of the side of a mountain so they could build nuclear weapons.”
Moreover, the lawmakers noted that “these waivers dangerously increase the risk of proliferation and whoever is advising President Trump otherwise is doing a disservice to him and the country. Instead, there are two actions the president should take immediately to tear up the nuclear deal once and for all.”
They explained that “first, end these waivers. Second, he should order our diplomats to invoke the United Nations snapback to restore international sanctions and restrictions on Iran.”
Finally, they assured Americans that they intend “to work with our colleagues in Congress to reverse the civil nuclear waivers and hold Iran accountable.”
