The 2020 Democratic presidential primary election is in full swing, as the political and media world will descend on Miami to watch the first two televised debates.
President Trump strategically chose to hold is reelection campaign kickoff in Orlando, and Democrats have chosen to kick off their primary season in Hispanic-heavy Miami-Dade County.
Once again, Florida will take center stage in the 2020 presidential elections.
Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and presidential candidate Julian Castro sees a great promise for his campaign, believing that he will defeat Trump, if he wins his party’s nomination.
In the first of three press conferences he has schedule in the days leading up to the debates, Castro believes that Hispanics “will turn out at a greater rate in 2020” than they did in previous midterm and presidential elections.
“I’m confident that my candidacy, this campaign, and if I’m the nominee, will help to galvanize the Latino vote like never before,” said Castro.
HISPOLITICA spoke to Castro about his assertion that he can get Hispanics to come out and vote for him.
Castor believes that he can beat Trump in the swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
“I’m the party’s best hope to go get the 29 electoral votes in Florida, the 11 electoral votes in Arizona, and the 38 electoral votes in my home state of Texas,” asserted Castro.
When asked why he thinks he is the best hope for Democrats against Trump, Castro said that as his name recognition grows, so do his chances to win the nomination.
“I believe that when my name ID increases, what we’re going to see is that in places like Florida, Texas, Arizona, and other states, that I am going to do very well against Donald Trump,” said Castro.
Castro then asserted that he had “no doubt” that if he wins the Democratic nomination that he would “turn out” Hispanics like “never seen before.”
“No doubt. I have no doubt that if I am the nominee, that you’ll see a Hispanic turn out like you’ve never seen before.
"That it will go through the roof compared to earlier cycles, and that places like Florida, Texas, Arizona will be winnable for Democrats.”- Sec. Julian Castro
A recent Univision poll shows Castro as one of top three candidates Latino voters support. Castro could be in position to overcome the other two candidates among Latino voters, if he can manage to raise his name ID.
Castro also added that Trump has not done enough for the Venezuelan community in Florida, failing to offer them Temporary Protective Status or TPS, an immigration initiative he says congressional Democrats have championed with the help of Republicans.
