Wasserman Schultz on Va sexual assault allegation: “Investigation is warranted”

Washington, D.C.-The start of the year has not been good for Virginia’s Democrat leadership.

First, Ralph Northam, Virginia’s Governor, becomes embroiled in controversy involving a yearbook photo where he may have either been one of two people in a photo – the one wearing black face or the one wearing KKK regalia.

Then, Virginia’s Attorney General, Mark Herring, comes forward and says that he too once wore black face, saying that “in 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time.”

Now, Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor is also facing controversy of his own after Vanessa Tyson, a college professor, has accused Justin Fairfax, Virginia’s Lt. Governor, of sexually assaulting her in 2004 while the Democratic National Convention was underway.

When Brett Kavanaugh was accused by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of sexual assault, Democrats lined up against the eventual Supreme Court Justice by saying that they believed Dr. Ford when an investigation had not fully come to a close. However, with Lt. Governor Fairfax’s controversy, Democrats this time around seem to be a bit muted.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) spoke to Capitol hill reporters on the allegation against Fairfax, where she was asked to share her thoughts on the controversy surrounding the leadership in the state of Virginia.

Wasserman Schultz was asked if Tyler was a credible accuser, in which the congresswoman  explained,“ I honestly, really haven’t had the chance to look at her allegations.”

When pressed that Tyson made her allegations public and that she has gone into detail about the sexual assault, the Congresswoman only asserted that “certainly, her allegations should be looked into.”

Reporters then asked if she believed Tyson, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz simply repeated, “I think her allegations need to be looked into.”

“As far as I know, she’s the only one that’s made those allegations. And, if she says they happened, and she has been as detailed as she has, I think an investigation is warranted,” she concluded.
